My mom made me cry this morning.
For someone who spent her career in the public eye she is a private person. And while many people reading this may know something about my mom's success at the top of her game on Wall St, most of you don't know my mom.
A theme I have been talking about:
While we may work arduously to prove our value, WHO WE ARE IN LIFE IS NOT EQUAL TO OUR CAREER
While there are many facets to my mom that are worth sharing about, I’d like to share what happened this morning.
I called her to get a perspective on a business topic, and she was out & about in NYC. She shared with me that she had given away the last of her ‘bags’ on the cold streets of New York this morning. What does that mean?
Last year, my mom decided to make bags of goodies for homeless people. Let me share about the love that goes into these bags. She stands at her dining table & puts together each sandwich with love – bread, meat, different cheeses, mustard, mayo – carefully constructed. She adds in an apple & puts together a baggie with some cookies. A drink – like a can of Pepsi. A napkin. A $10 bill. She ties the whole thing up with a piece of holiday ribbon.
Then she sets out on her way. It takes a couple trips, but she’s purposeful. She is out to give a gift to someone who may not otherwise have a holiday to celebrate.
Yesterday she handed out 6 packages. She shared about a family she came across – immigrants from Latin America with a mom, dad, and a young girl. They were so grateful to receive a bag in such a challenging time. Mom wanted to give them another, but on that day, she only had one bag left, and she knew the man she was saving it for. He was usually in the same spot.
Today when we spoke, she had just given out 4 more bags. First, she went to see if the family from yesterday were still there. They weren’t. She gave a second bag to the man I mentioned. He seems like a good man, and she has seen him there again and again. He said, ‘But you already gave me one yesterday”, and she said, “I know. I want to give you another”.
My mom and I were on FaceTime and while she was wearing sunglasses, I could tell how filled up she was. I asked about it and told her how proud I am. She put so much love into making those bags. She said, “Yes – I really considered what to put into each sandwich”. I get that. She made each sandwich with love.
