Perhaps more than anyone, I have known of my husband’s natural creativity and eye for design since the first Valentine’s Day we shared 25 years ago. I was still in my 20s, and this guy I was dating presented me with a dinner in his flat in San Francisco’s Cole Valley. What he made by hand and put in front of me that was the likes of any fine restaurant I had been to – I didn’t even know what a morel was at the time! Little did I know that my date had learned expediting for Chefs that included Michael Mena and George Morrone. Not only is he a creative, but I have grown to know his attention to detail is second to none.
Now while my husband Michael Hubbard has spent the years selling technology for NetApp, EMC, NetSuite/Oracle, and he did his jobs well as a focused, exacting, determined, learner, it has ALWAYS been his creative side that fuels him. I have learned so much over the years about design and precision by observing the projects and hobbies (photography, painting, sound and audio, home design and real estate, cycling and customizing machines, ideating crazy treatments for Hollywood) he has taken on with a fury to keep him from losing his mind in a tech world that always seemed foreign to his joy.
Several years ago, he exclaimed, “I will not be doing this (tech) job when I am 55!” And he said it again. At the end of October, before he turned 55, he made the move to build his childhood dream with a concept that came to him in the middle of the night on a vacation in Tuscany.
He calls his design studio, 𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗟-𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗧-𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗥𝗘 (@SIDdesignstudio), named for the characteristics he sees in people living their lives to the thriving fullest! His goal is to make his design and art philosophy accessible to many, and over time, this will include a variety of objects, and lifestyle suggestions. He built the modern industrial-style desk in his office.
I’ve watched him build this first offering over the last 4 months and I am so proud. Of course, the curated images from his collection of photography are beautiful – and there seems to be something for any taste. But to also watched him create this new webstore from nothing, never having built anything like this before… to watch him write the descriptions, find & work with partners, bring on vendors, meticulously build out the SKUs for so many different sizes framed and unframed, connect to all the pieces of the transactional backend… it was something. Of course, now it’s time to GO!
And so – if you are looking for a piece of art for your home, your office, your business, your restaurant: bookmark the site. It’s just the beginning.
I bring you, SIDDesignStudio - launching with a curated selection of photography and fine art of Michael Hubbard, my husband – NOW available for purchase in a variety of sizes, framed and stand-alone prints. Congratulations Michael!
